COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course will cover ECG interpretation basics, the normal pathways of electrical activity in the heart and the different dysrhythmias, which may be seen in anesthesia patients. We will cover the causes of the different dysrhythmias, and proper treatments.

Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to:

1. Identify Normal ECG tracings
   1. Recognize what a normal ECG looks like
   2. Recognize what its different parts represent.
2. Identify preventricular contractions (PVCs)
3. Identify preatrial contractions (PACs)
4. Recognize atrioventricular blocks (AV blocks)
5. Recognize the three lethal rhythms and the proper treatments to prepare for, if needed, for each.

COURSE OUTLINE:

Week 1: Normal electrical activity of the heart:
Content: We will cover the different parts of the normal ECG complex and what each represents. We will cover measurements, rates, and techniques of obtaining good quality ECGs.

Week 2: Complexes of Abnormal Atrial Origin:
Content: We will discuss the causes of the different atrial dysrhythmias and their treatments. This will include what to be prepared for in the event the veterinarian needs to make rapid modality changes.

Week 3: AV Blocks:
Content: We will discuss 1st, 2nd, and 3rd degree blocks, their causes and appropriate treatments. This will include what to be prepared for in the event the veterinarian needs to make rapid modality changes.

Week 4: Ventricular Dysrhythmias:
Content: We will discuss the different dysrhythmias of ventricular origin, their causes and treatments. This will include what to be prepared for in the event the veterinarian needs to make rapid modality changes.

MESSAGE BOARD DISCUSSIONS:
Case discussions will begin 3 (three) days before the start of the course and will continue for one week following the last real time session. These discussions will be held in the VSPN CE course area.

CE HOURS: 6

TUITION:
$96 ($86 Early Bird before June 23, 2003)
Full time students of an AVMA accredited Veterinary Technician Program will receive a reduced rate for this course of $48.00 (upon verification of student status)

COURSE WITHDRAWAL AND REFUND POLICY: Withdrawal prior to the listed start date of a course entitles the registrant to a complete refund or a credit toward a future VSPN CE course, whichever is preferred. Withdrawal within 1 week after the listed start date (i.e. including no more than one real-time session) entitles the registrant to a credit toward any future VSPN CE course. (Does not apply to courses with only one real-time session.) After the first real-time session, a registrant may withdraw due to special circumstances and receive prorated credit towards a future VSPN course. These requests will be handled on an individual basis. The amount of the prorated credit will be determined based on 65% of the time remaining in the course at the time of withdrawal.
